Canoeing and Kayaking on : Shropshire Union Canal

Paddle Point

An interesting route on the Shroppie from the urban and sub-industrial squalor of Ellesmere Port, through the pleasant city of Chester (with it's canal side shops and pubs), taking in the Chester Canal basin, the staircase locks and a flight of locks outside Chester before winding out into the Cheshire countryside, past the famous Cheshire Ice Cream Farm and ending up in the shadow of Beeston Castle, at the Shady Oak pub. Here you can land at the jetty, enjoy a pint and an enormous meal and camp at their well appointed and reasonably priced site http://www.campsite-review.co.uk/Cheshire/Beeston/The_Shady_Oak.html. There are some pretty negative reviews from canal users online, but I think it changed hands in 2011 and I've been there twice and it was good (not brilliant, but hey...) on both occasions.
