Rivers
Canoeing and Kayaking on : River Severn

The longest river in the country is one of the best places to go canoeing. The River Severn suits all sorts of paddlers, but is particularly suited to canoe touring.

The most popular parts of the Severn for canoeing are between Pool Quay, near Welshpool, and Bewdley.

Lower Lode is a public launch point and slipway and parking area (the name is used for both the ferry point, and also for the stream which emerges here into the River Severn). In summer months, a small passenger ferry plies back and forth here, mainly to the pub on the opposite bank. The impressive Cheltenham School Rowing club is just downstream of you on the same bank.

You can either tackle the main river, or instead, use this route via the quiet stream - Lower Lode - to have a quiet and peaceful paddle first.

At this point, Lower Lode, a tiny stream, winds up for about a mile into Tewkesbury, ending at an old mill, and a large weir. The banks are overgrown in summer with willow and reeds. This is an interesting paddle, but there is no easy way off the river, so you have to retrace your steps.

There's a layby here with a gate just to the north, and the river is just a short distance away.

Unloading at the gate is possible, then move the car to the layby, or possibly the paddle-friendly Green Man pub near the road bridge upstream.

Recent change of ownership of land giving access. Signage indicates access now by prior permission only despite this being shown on Environment Agency guide as Official launch site. Has been in use as access point for 30 years +.
Thanks mate. Any idea on how folk get this "prior permission"? Cheers.

Hanley Castle launching point. Angling signs make it look as if you can't boat here, but you can. The ramp was made specifically for recreational boat users, and there is space to park.

Paddle Point

Popular playspot for Gloucester Canoe Club. This weir can form excellent play waves, especially if you time it correctly between high tides.

Fairly easy retrieval of swimmers below the weir. But caution needs to be had with the timing. This is the end point of the Severn Bore tidal wave, which occurs 4-5 times most months, as well as high tide reaching here with smaller waves in between. Don't get caught out, check the tide times.

Good pub nearby.

Paddle Point

This can be a serious paddle. Wind over tide causes serious turbulence and standing waves. Spring tides are awesome and it's possible to paddle to Gloucester in one hit. Also a good starting point for a paddle down channel. Slip is free for public but shared with life boat station. Parking alongside and also a good pub.
