Rivers
Canoeing and Kayaking on : River Idle

The Idle is a surprisingly little known river in North Nottinghamshire, that is a perfect place for canoeing. Small, with a few little weirs which are usually easy to run, it is green and rural.

The river is not developed for canoeists, so put ins and get outs can involve undergrowth and steep banks!

The Idle runs from the confluence of the Rivers Maun and Meden, down to the Trent.

The Chesterfield Canal runs through Retford, and it is possible to make a longer canoeing adventure by using this to return from the Trent to Retford.

A very pleasant paddle from an excellent pub. Please phone the pub in advance to check its OK to launch from their garden (it always is), and have a pint or meal their afterwards.

From the source to just over half way (Mattersey)

An excellent and varied route through farmland, town, woods, parks and meandering across meadows.

There are a number of small weirs (less than a foot) which can be run in normal conditions. There is one slightly larger weir downstream of Halcroft Fisheries, which should be inspected to check for blockages.

In high water conditions, a few low bridges could create a problem and a hazard. In low water there may be a couple of shallow stretches.

Paddle Point

An excellent, incredibly friendly pub, seemingly untouched by the modern era. Good ales, and locally sourced, homemade food. However, this is no "foody" pub, so the food is only on at certain times, and the pub keeps slightly reduced opening hours.

There is a small platform at the bottom of the lovely, tree-shaded garden. The pub are very happy for paddlers to launch or finish there, assuming they grab a pint or two at some point.

The pub are very happy for canoeists to camp here - for free assuming patronage of the pun.

A proper pub!
