Canoeing and Kayaking on : River Nene

Paddle Point
Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, UK

Easy entry via Portage Point, plenty of free parking, dry footpath from car park to launch point.

Paddle Point updated to a Play Spot - please give details.
The Downstream Portage point at Upper Wellingborough Lock is "permanently closed for health and safety reasons" according to the EA. This means a difficult lift over the lock is necessary to go upstream.
Is parking still free at the embankment?

Small weir into narrow backwater. Portage over style river left.

Paddle Point

Portaged river left, slightly awkward for open canoes due to steps and narrow gate.

Awful awful portage point. The 'offical' up stream point is too high when the river is low. We used the next section which was low enough, but then we had to lift the kayak up the slope, no steps and over the fence at the top.

the upstream side of the lock was even higher and as a less agile paddler I was unable to safely launch from it. This portage point really needs redoing with paddlers in mind.

If you struggle with the height/fence lift at the official portage points here then there is a muddy inlet about 150 m up stream from the lock where it may be easier to launch, and similiar downstream on the opposite bank.
Paddle Point

Weir into backwater to bypass Elton lock. Portage river left. Care needed as put in close to powerful weir, with some towback so you need to act quickly once in the canoe. If in doubt, go further downstream before getting in.

There is a portage platform above and below on river right. About 100m portage across grass.

Paddle Point

Portage platform river right above weir. However, put-in is very close to the weir, so in strong flow extreme care would be required.

Park on the minor road directly to the east - easy access into the field and a short walk across to the bridge for an easy get in avoiding any grief from the businesses at Nene Park.

When the Nene is in flood the field can be underwater, however... so I guess you can launch immediately :)

The Stanwick Lakes backwater is presently unpassable as the first bridge is being repaired and the river is completely closed off.
Stanwick Lakes backwater is now open again
The Environment Agency have closed the portage point on the Stanwick Lakes backwater due to a "trip hazard". Rangers from Stanwick Lakes and other people have looked at the portage and can see nothing wrong with it. Stanwick Rangers have said that they would be willing to maintain it but, at present, the EA will not allow this. I contacted the River Ranger, Andy Hall, who said the closing was nothing to do with him and that, anyway, the EA has funding issues and they are not obliged to maintain canoe portages and so the likelihood is that they would remove/close them rather than repair them.

Portage Point at Earls Barton Lock is closed due to undercutting. I have contacted EA and they plan to reinforce when weather improves!
The Portage Point at White Mills has been removed! It is not clear whether it is being repaired. Entry is still possible but from a muddy bank.
Portage point at Earls Barton Lock has now been repaired and is fully operational.
This portage point is still not repaired. its just a muddy bank with some dangerous looking wires sticking out from previous construction. someone has stuck a bit of carpet over it but not ideal. looks more like it has been vandalised than removed. shame nice quiet spot for practice!

Launch immediately downstream of first bridge on river right (lift boat over low fence).

Access to the EA mooring is through a private estate - avoid car boot sales on Sunday morning.
I have left car there regularly but not overnight.

Staff on this site have made it clear that we are not welcome to use this point or park cars as they have a dispute with the Environment Agency. They are liable to lock the gates and trap you in there.
No problems using this spot so far, though it's quite some height from water to mooring platform! The only barrier on this area is some distance away and would block off multiple car parks including this one, which is for a nursery - doesn't seem awfully likely to be closed unless late in the evening.
See comment re disputed status added to Irthlingborough Bridge's Paddlepoint.

Private launch point, but the people at the Frontier Centre are friendly and generally permit its use during their opening hours - pop into the centre first and ask permission and they'll give you info on parking and opening the gate just before the launch point.

Unrestricted car-parking on nearby street (side of pub) - can unload boat in front of gate by the mooring.

Not fun when Nene is in flood - the mooring tends to get clogged with debris from upstream

Carry canoe over footbridge - drop into main Nene navigation or into the backwater - the sluice produces some good white water after decent rain.

Paddle Point

If launching from car park near mill in Wadenhoe, this bridge is a genuine hazard in fast/high flows.

Paddle Point

The EA removed the portage platform after realising this backwater is too overgrown in summer/autumn and there is a low bridge by the gauging station that is a danger in high flows.
Pretty backwater with several small weirs into it.

Good Launch point, with moderate roadside car-parking

Paddle Point

One of the best and longest of the Nene backwaters.
Care needed at small drop over redundant Nene Way crossing - a tree is down river right but can sometimes be paddled over; taking the river left route can set you towards a concrete wall.

Tree now removed. Email sent from the Patterdale Paddler. Thanks
There is now a tree caught up on river left. In normal flow it is reasonably easy to keep to right to miss it, but in high flow the current could take you straight into it.

Park at the end of Station Lane. Easy launch into Backwater of the Nene

It is indeed an easy launch. Note that you have to cross the railway from the end of the lane, but its easy across a level crossing, the line is the quiet Nene Valley Railway, and then its about 100m to the river over grass.
