Rivers
Canoeing and Kayaking on : River Orwell

The Orwell is a tidal estuary which is a good place for canoeing. Some experience is required, as tidal currents, exposed open water and large shipping movements all need to be considered.

A one way canoe route going with the tide.

Launch at low tide at Shotley Gate, and make sure you are round the headland into the Orwell before the tide has started to flow in earnest.

There are massive shipping movements here at times, as you are opposite Felixstowe Docks, but low tide also means most of the biggest vessels won't be moving. However even the smaller ones can be thousands of tons!

This is a large estuary paddle, bringing with it tides and winds. To all intents & purposes, you are on the sea. Therefore this is recommended to those familiar with such places, and not for beginners.

The pub at Pinmill is not to be missed!
